Mainframe Myth Busters: COBOL is a legacy language. It must be replaced

COBOL has been around since the 1960’s and has morphed into a language that has defied many critics. So why continue with COBOL if it is deemed a language that has been around for a long while. This is the question many C-Suites are faced with. The real questions is can we use COBOL and continue to build out innovations at a faster pace than we do currently. As an organization you have invested in building systems in COBOL to deliver many profitable ventures and expansions let alone the new products and services that have been deployed over the years. So how can we survive with COBOL and deliver at a faster pace.

Here are some of our CUBE frameworks we employ:

  • Modular designs allowing functions to be encapsulated
  • Functionality can be granular or coarse determined by complexity
  • Integration with more agile languages like Java and Python

These are but a few ways. The key to doing this is to fully understand and build out the design in incremental fashion allowing for continuous re-factoring. Chat to us on ways we can help. COBOL is not dead, it is just re-invented with support from other languages like Java and Python. COBOL on its own will never deliver all you need to be agile with speed. You have to take a different approach where COBOL acts as the mothership, flagged by intermediate to smaller ships focussing on specifics.

Result – Myth Busted only if you integrate with mothership
