Myth008 – Cyber Security defenses with some spice

The word Cyber Security and compromising your organization is synonymous with hacking and will send shivers down many a CISO. So what is it that threatens a digital landscape. Is it that people are relaxed when it comes to securing their own devices or is it that organizations are not doing enough to outsmart the hacker. Whilst organizations have put in a lot of effort in educating their people, their customers and have spent millions on buying expensive solutions, compromises still happen.

So what is the recipe to try and achieve a high degree of comfort. I say high degree because the hacker is always 2-steps ahead of you. You need to be smart around your solutions and you need to ensure a multi-layered approach. The most common problem is expecting  a piece of hardware or a software solution to completely negate any attacks. This normally creates a false sense of security and this is when you are at your most vulnerable. Whilst there are defences you can put at different levels, these are just that – defences – and this can be breached by savvy hackers with a little knowledge from the inside.

The key to a successful Cyber Security strategy based on our experiences and learning is to do the following:

So whilst buying off-the-shelf products helps to a certain extent, they are not necessarily a fully guaranteed approach to Cyber Security. The question that needs answering is does your Cyber Security provider give you a guarantee that you will never be hacked. In our view guarantees like these are extremely difficult to get and one has to ensure you take a different approach around cyber security, one that is built around your environment, your landscape, your technology and your people. This myth is in the balance as there are certainly products that complement your security posture so they are needed but you need the spice that pulls it all together. This is where you make the difference. Our experiences have taught us never to be complacent so you need to be ahead of your game.
